Product Review: The Miracle Blanket

By Katherine B.

As a weary mother of a two month old I needed some help in getting my little one to sleep well during the night so I could get some much needed sleep myself. I tried playing soothing music and various attempts at swaddling with one or even two receiving blankets. Searching online for advice, I learned about the Miracle Blanket. After debating for a few nights, I placed an order at 2:30am one day. The night after I received the Miracle Blanket my little guy slept five hours straight!

The Miracle Blanket provided a way to easily swaddle my baby with no snaps, buttons, zippers or velcro. It also kept my active escape artist swaddled all night long. I had tried various methods of swaddling including trying to double-swaddle my baby and each time his arms would break free of the swaddle within 30 minutes. As soon as my baby had his arms free the involuntary arm twitches common for all newborns would wake him in just a few minutes. But with the miracle blanket his arms stayed tucked in and he could sleep through the night. By the time I had to stop using the miracle blanket he was sleeping for a full eight hours and so was I!

The Miracle Blanket is designed so that the weight of the baby keeps his arms swaddled. Inside the blanket are two flaps that go over your baby’s arms and then under his back. And, since babies should sleep on their backs to prevent SIDS, the blanket creates an almost impossible to escape swaddle. The Miracle Blanket also has a pouch built into it to hold your baby’s feet so that when he kicks he doesn’t loosen the swaddle. The pouch doesn’t bind his feet and he is still free to have some movement.

The design of the Miracle Blanket makes it a rather warm blanket. A baby should be comfortable in just a simple onesie and the blanket. On particularly cold nights you might consider putting some socks on your baby’s feet.

Also, the design makes it difficult to swaddle your baby without waking him. But, it can be done. Make sure that you use a soft but firm grip as you lift your baby when folding the arm flaps under his back. Try to support him under the small of his back, letting the crib support his upper back, head and neck. Avoid grabbing his legs as this may create twisting in the blanket. After the arm flaps are folded down then you can ease his feet into the pouch before completing the swaddle. To see a video of the Miracle Blanket in use go to www.MiracleBlanket.com.

I loved having the Miracle Blanket for my son. He quit using it when he began to try to roll over. Since a baby needs his arms free to roll over, swaddling techniques involving the arms should no longer be used. If you need to transition your baby from the Miracle Blanket to pajamas you may want consider doing just a lower body swaddle or using a sleep sack.
